Maintaining your site- be a Multimedia
handyman.
The problem with multimedia that is
distributed by CD is that it tends to become stale rather quickly
in the current milieu. If you are using shockwave to incorporate
the web into your project, keeping your project up to date becomes
a lot easier. you can have your project make a call out to a
browser and take your user to a website with updated info fairly
easily.
The web is a dynamic and continually
changing resource. This is a very positive aspect of it's nature.
However, that means that you must keep it current by checking
regularly for broken or moved links, outdated info and new and
pertinent resources. It is a good idea to include a "last
updated on" notice on the first page of the shocked site.
Another approach is to have an "what's
new" link for regular visitors to access. Again, your webmaster
and site checking services which find broken links may be of
great use to keep you up to date. there is no substitute for
your regular inspection of the pages. I sometimes offer "mediascout"
awards to students who find and report broken links or glitches
in projects as well. An added touch could be to have a submission
form for reporting broken links on your main page.
Here's a link for a cgi based tool to
create a what's new page- CHRONO.
a good article on staying up to date with web info...
