May 29, 2006 Memorial Day Musings

I get a kick out of my 95 year old Mother -in -Law's idioms and sayings, of which there is no shortage. One is "Lord have murder" instead of "Lord have mercy". I have no idea how mercy turned to murder, but in her formative years, she picked up on this and it remains to this day.

King of Glory

Lift up your heads oh you gates
Lift up your heads everlasting gates
Be lifted up you ancient doors
That the King may come in
That the King of Glory may come in.
Oh you gates of our hearts
Oh you doors of our souls
Be drawn up in mercy
Open under His control
That the King of Glory may come in
That the King of glory may come in!
Who is this King of Glory?
The Lord of Hosts is His Name
Who is this King of Glory?
The Lord of All is His Name!
He is the King of Glory - we proclaim
He is the king of Glory, e're the same
The King of glory is His name!

In this Little Room

In this little room of mine, this place within my heart
Is a sanctuary out of time where all my thoughts are set apart.
Here within this special place the door's flung open wide
So I can greet Christ face to face as he bids me come inside.
In this secret sacred sanctuary
In intimate communion with God's will
I will go there often and will tarry
I will know the meaning of "be still."
In this little room of mine, it's safe and secure there
Nothing to distract I find- the walls are clean and bare.
Here is my Gethsemane, this is my sacred place
This is where I am set free as I fall upon my face
In this secret sacred sanctuary
In intimate communion with God's will
I will go there often and will tarry
I will know the meaning of "be still."
Now as in this world I walk, part of my soul shall hide
In the inner sanctum where we talk as with Christ I abide
A quiet conversation's heard between my Lord and me
The ears of my heart hears each word, the eyes of my heart see.
In this secret sacred sanctuary
In intimate communion with God's will
I will go there often and will tarry
I will know the meaning of "be still."

Speaking of little rooms, here is our little house. I went and got a plat at the courthouse and overlaid it on the Google map satellite picture- pretty cool huh?

By Your Word

By Your Word You have created all things
By Your Word of wisdom all creation sings!
The light and the earth and the creatures and man
And time itself march to your Holy command.
By your Word of Promise you called out Abraham
And declared his descendants would be like the sands
By Your Word the promise would come to be shown
You would create a people and called them your own.
By Your Word of Your Law a people was formed
The Word of the Lord came and a nation was born.
By your word of deliverance your people came out
Of their bondage and suffering and darkness and doubt
Your Word declared new life to Ezekiel's day
Resurrection would come by the word you would Say.
When You sent forth your word so we could comprehend
When the Word became flesh and dwelt among men.
By Your Word your Spirit will indwell and live:
In each heart your Word enters New Life it will give
So the Word of the Lord is within us displayed.
Oh come and receive and believe it today .

Bread Alone

Bread alone will never bring us life
Bread alone will never end our strife
But every word that shall proceed
From the Mouth of the Lord is all we will need
Bread alone will never serve to sustain
Grass withers, flowers fade, but God's Word remains.
His Word will never return empty
It accomplishes His heart's desire when it's heard
God has always created His people
We are formed and are found by God's Word.
Bread alone will never bring us life
Bread alone will never end our strife
But every word that shall proceed
From the Mouth of the Lord is all we will need

May 29, 2006 Da Vinci Doings..

This is just in from my friend Larry, who has been teaching DaVinci Code sessions at a great church in Dallas. Since I am not qualified to comment on a movie I don't intend to see, I will pass along his considered and well-informed take on the movie:

The DaVinci Cod

Larry says: "I saw DVC yesterday, very disappointed. It has the same malady for which I downgraded the LOTR films, and to a much lesser extent, the HP movies and LWW -- that being, changeitis...

Changeitis (n), unneeded and poorly-conceived changes based on the mistaken premise that the book can be (and needs to be) improved upon, Often this is accompanied by bigger bangs, higher climbs, deeper drops, crunchier crashes, and more bare buttocks than suggested in the book.

The truth is, I always have to see such a movie twice, because I am so angry with the changes that I cannot enjoy the movie the first time. I spend the entire film muttering to myself "Why did they make that change??!! It didn't improve or explain things better at all! It was only change for the sake of change." And then I say, well, Ron Howard had to do SOMETHING different to explain his existence and salary. I also think Tom Hanks was miscast, but I liked Audrey Tautou a lot!"
