July 3, 2003 Miss Mary had it right...

Seems my first grade teacher knew what she was doing after all.

A new study says that a 60-90 minute daytime nap can provide the same sleep-related benefits in learning new things as an entire night's sleep. That's nice to know, but what kind of person can actually do this? Most of us don't work jobs where we can leave a meeting and go take a 90-minute nap to soak it all in.

July 3, 2003 More on Mel's Passion
From Relevantmagazine.com- A rough cut of Mel Gibson's upcoming film on the life of Jesus, The Passion, was recently shown to a group from Focus on the Family, and it turns out the film isn't what early critics made it out to be. For one, it has subtitles. ³I donıt know if Mel was ever serious about not having any subtitles,² one attendee told MSNBC.com. ³If he was, he has moved beyond that now. The version I saw actually had too many subtitles. We donıt need distracting translations flashing on the screen when the Roman soldiers are saying obvious things like, ŒHey, you, move!ı Mel noted that they were going to eliminate some of the subtitles in future edits." It also turns out that the film isn't anti-Semitic. "ŒThe Passionı is a stunning work of art,² another viewer said. ³It is a devout act of worship from Mel and his collaborators ‹ in the way that Handelıs ŒMessiahı and Notre Dame were artistic acts of worship in previous times. Letıs get the controversy out of the way right at the top. The film is faithful to the Gospel, particularly St. John. It is no more anti-Semitic than is the Gospel² ...
July 2, 2003 Just Can't' help that bloggin...

Thought I would be taking a loinger break but it was not to be. Still expect a light offering this week.

Read this article by Phil Yancey on Nouwen and it elicited a response. It did from Jordan Cooper too- read his July 1 post.

This reaffirms the notion I have been hearing in my head that corporate Christian experience is about much more than a Sunday worship service or a cell group meeting. We gave our home to Christ to use any way he wants five years ago yet I don't see this sort of abandonemtn happening in our lives and it strikes me to the core. So as an act of repentance I must open myself up to an intentionality (not a strategy) that sees fruit like this happen.

I was just talking this morning inan email to a friend who had unexpected guests drop in. I was empathizing with a bit of his consternation and see that I share the same attitudes toward the idol of privacy. Have I sought to build my own monastic system in my private world? Do I covet time alone in the garden with Jesus and thereby miss the point of my purpose in the world?

I don't think this means I need to turn the house into a homeless shelter- there are facilities like that in the community. But I do need to think in terms of our home becoming a spiritual homeless shelter. That is what the church is caklled to be and it ain't happenin' in the big buildings all around the metro east.
