October 15, 2007 A Day at Bible Study

Earnie and I spent the day in a 4 session Bible study of Romans with Dr. Tom Schreiner. Dr. Schreiner covered the epistle in an overview designed to equip teachers for a January Bible study Lifeway is making available. Dr. Schreiner took lots of questions and was able to do justice to most of Romans up to Chapter 11 at least, addressing differences he has with D.M. Lloyd-Jones, Doug Moo, J.Dunn, and N. T. Wright.

My only question didn’t yield satisfactory results- no more than anyone debating the question for the last 2000 years has come up with at least...I wondered about the war described in Romans 7 and asked about the factions involved in the war. Is it the tension evidenced in the status of simil justis et peccatore? Is it as the NIV translates sarx- a battle between two natures in one human? To me that abrogates the use of the word nature. Schreiner said he wa uncomfortable with the implications of translation of sarx as nature but admitted that sin is generated somewhere. I do not see the problem with a new creation that deals with a now and not yet aspect of the flesh. Taking it to mean nature moves the issue to another anthropological category.

We will Rise Up

Lord we will rise up like an eagle when it flies
Lord we will rise up giving glory as we arise
Satan may scheme to drag us down
But we will respond as those who’ve found
The Hope of Glory and the peace that never dies.

We will rise lift our eyes
Claim your presence as our prize
Raise us up and light the skies
Following Christ- we will arise.

Lord we will rise up, fix our eyes upon Your throne
There’ll be no other god we’ll serve but You alone
Lifting us up on wings of grace
You’ve transformed the dreams we chase
You are greater than any dream we’ve ever known

Lord we will rise up, We will arise from the grave
We will rise up because of the promise that you gave
Raising us to that heavenly place
Our destination in the race
We will rule and reign with you who are mighty to save

We will rise lift our eyes
Claim your presence as our prize
Raise us up and light the skies
Following Christ- we will arise.
